EXPERIENCING RESUWiSCTIOH UOf-J
At the heart of the Christian faith is the life giving power of God,. It is a
power revealed most fully and clearly in Jesus himself, but it is most certainly not
a power that is just given to him. The whole point of God's life in Christ is for
us to share in Jesus' way, a way both of the cross and of the resurrection.
As God's power is not just reserved for Jesus, so neither is the resurrection.
The desire of God is for all of us to experience the resurrection presence and power
of Christ. This is not something that must wait until we die: it is to be
experienced now. But how, and in what kind of situations?
If a person is feeling depressed or a sense of purposelessness in their life and
then comes to discover the love that God has for them with an awareness of the closeness
of Christ to their situation, then that will be an experience of the life-giving power
of resurrection.
Or may be the situation is quite different: two people who have been very close to
each other, perhaps a married couple, come to realize that in fact they have drifted
apart. There have become areas in their relationship that just have not grown and so,
in realityf have died. There has been an increasing number of issues that they have
not talked about. They have slipped into patterns of relating that have stunted their
growth. They suddenly find themselves facing up to the pain of this situation,. In
the hurt that they experience, they have firstly to acknowledge something of the "death"'
that has already taken place. Then they are able to acknowledge their responsibility
for what has happened, forgive each other and begin again, maybe slowly and pain fully,
but now with new hope and purposefulness; they have experienced the resurrection power
of God.
Or in a much simpler situation, two people have an argument which develops so badl
that they stop talking to each other. Their relationship is, effectively, deadi A
word of forgiveness or apology is able to breathe back new life: resurrection.
This life-giving, resurrection force is felt in all its creativity in quite
different ways as welV* The composer sits staring at a blank sheet of paper, or maybe
the person staring is the writer of th^s letter. Nothing^ What is to go on the sheet?
Out of that darkness and emptiness, an idea germinates and grows: new life has come.
Above all, God wants the limited nature of our lives and loves to become abundantly
full with the whole of his life both here on earth and afterwards in heaven: that will
be Resurrection.

Church Urban Fund. 'Thanks to the j^reat generosity of many parishioners, All Saints'
tccal contribution to .the Church Urban Fund amounted to very nearly £6,000 - truly
wonderful response. Nearly 300 projects are being supported by che Fund in deprived
inner* city areas across the country. Examples of typical projects are illustrated in
a CUF handout cf whi<?h there are a number of copies in church. Please do take one if

Lent Pi scussi on Group t John arid Ann Chenevi x-Trench have a;/,ain invited the group to
their home, where John has led the -discussions.
The Church Clock. <A firm, has been found which will restore to working order all three'
faces of the clock.; and this started in the first week in April, While scaffolding is" :
in place a check on the. condition of the church roof will also be carried cut.
Organ Renovation. This work will be starting on April 23rd, and carrying on durin.n.
flay for about six weeks. It is hoped that part of the or.-gan will still be in commission
during this time, but, invany case, there will be music at church services!
Coleshill Contact. A tea par'ty we.3 hold at'the home of Helen & ilichael Spencer on
January 30th, and enjoyed by all who attended;- The next event is planned for Thursday,
April 26th, at the home ,of Dumpy & Grc.har:i Swerling, Brentford Grange Farm. .

A Letter from Raphael
After three weeks living at Raphael, 1 realise that in spite of fiv^j years corresponding
with and working and. praying for the place, my understanding of i t was woefully
superficial, //hat 1 an now able tc experience is the wonderfully'cheery atmosphere
and the love and-dedication shewn by staff and volunteers.
Raphael is set amongst Sal trees on a ridge above a dried out river bed in the Doon
Valley, with the Garhwal Hills as a back-drop. Each time I go for a walk in the woods
or fields 1 seem" to see three or four birds new to me - mostly of brilliant colours.
1 have already feasted in Shiv Sadnn, tht. leper village, as they celebrated the festival
of Shivaratri; joined in singing with the mentally handicapped people of all ages in
Ava Vihar'(Ily Bonny Lies Over the Ocean ia a special favourite!); taught English songs
tc the girls - children, of leprous parent-3 or orphans - af the Little '/hite House (those
in Coleshill who have heard me play the recorder may be surprised that 1 was invited
back!); played Scrabble with cue cf the tpas tics (in English - he won but conceded that
1 might get quite good with practice!); cad been covered with paint powder by everyone
as we celebrated Hcli - a happy festival marking the end of winter and the coming of Spring
But perhaps of most interest tc Ccleshill have been my visits with the T3 Eradication
.labile Team. 'jd set off in a jeep in the morning - the doctor, tho lab technician, the
driver and the cook, - and visit two or ;-.hr«o villages which act as centres tc which
patients may'come from miles around on fcot,.by bus or by pony cart. The doctor sets
up his 'clinic1, consisting of a table, two chairs and a tin trunk full of drugs, on a
convenient verge or open space - as it m:.ght be the school playground or by the pond in
Coleshill - and anything up to 100 patients squat around in a semi-circle waiting their
turn. It may .take several hours in the ,'-ct sunshine, but they are amazingly patient
and there is little attempt at queue jumping. Their general health is checked, they
are given a month's supply of drugs and '-hose who need it jet extra rations of milk
powder and meal which, as you know is the particular aspect to which our contribution
from the All Saints' Harvest Charity is put*
At one village we set up cur camp in front of the local post office. 1 had a look
inside to see what it locked like. It w:\s a bare room with just two empty bedsteads
in it. Later when 1 glanced at the dcorv/ay, 1 was surprised tc see a calf trotting
out! 1 never did discover v;hero the villagers bought their stamps!
Raphael is run by 70 year4, old Cenoval 'Rv.ir.ny1 Bakhshi with a splendid blend of army
efficiency and compassion. He sends his greetings and thanks tc all in Ccleshill.
1 hope that this gives you a flavour cf the place and that when 1 return I shall be
able to give you a better idea cf Raphael and the magnificent and unique work that you
have been so generously suppercing over jhe last fi.ve yearsi Thanks tc an anonymous
donation of £100 that 1 brought cut with me, one of the young girls, the first,
from here to go on a computer course, will from today be able to get there on a bicycle
and thus be much more independent, and ir. -re will follow.
ilany people here have expressed a great interest in the village 1 ccrne from, and 1 am
hoping next week tc be able to show them the slides that Stephen I!i tchan took at the
last Harvest Charity activities.

CHRISTIAN AID 1990
Christian Aid Ueek starts on 14th 1'ay, and a house to house collection will, be made
during the week. Children from Coleshi 11 First School are i llustratin , the theme
"The world cur community" on Tuesday, 15th 'lay, at 2.00 pm, followed by a video-, talk
by ','rs Barbara Sparkes, Traldcraft stall and tea.. Everyone welcome.
On Thursday, 17th i!ay, we are holding a novelty Dos Show on the Cricket field,
by courtesy of the Cricket and Archery Clubs. The ground will be open- at 6 pm to
allow dbg owners time to register their dprjs for the various classes for a 6.30 start.
There will be a raffle, barbecue and cake stall. -

of shops in the morning/ and in the. afternoon at the Urban .Studies Cencre, taking'a

We took part in the Litterblitz in TTarch. .Staff and children went to Jordans School
on 23th ISarch to take part in our Annual Husic. morning. We sang sea shanties and

OurWhist Drive will be held or, Wednesday 4th April in aid of the School Fund.
We are particularly concerned about che speed of traffic through the village. Parents
walking to and from school with prans and children report close encounters, and after
school, when many adults and children are leaving the premises, there is r,reat danger from
speeding vehicles. PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY for everyone's safety.
Next term we shall be celebrating 140 years since the opening of the school, by
studying the. i/ict/orian era. We should be very grateful for the lean of any photographs,
documents or other articles relating to. the school or the village, and for personal

and Katy Woodland who were enrolled cr. 25th February, Helen Oakden and Rachel TaylOr
who were enrolled on 2nd April and Victoria Prcddcw who will be enrolled next term.
We have said goodbye to Genma and Natalie who were transferred to another pack anc1
to Suzy, Zee and Sarah. We still have room for more'girls.
Miccla, Suzy, Katy, Holly, Katie, Rebecca, Natalie, Rebecca and Cabrielle have worked
hard and just gained their Safety in the Home Badge. Rebecca and Katie read Prayers
at the District Thinkin,", Day Service at St 'lary's and were complimented on being the
or.]y ones who could be clearly heard all over the Church. Hearly all the Pack attende.
Church Parade at All Saints' last month where they enjoyed readin;, the lesson, read
prayers and took the collection, again very competently.
They have been ve'ry busy .-making Thinking Day albums on America.,. Australia and Singapore,
they made cards.foi? s'other's Day, and a very large card to say Tharikyou to Brown Owl
who left us' at half' term, but cane back-1 to see us on the last .day of term.. .
Since tak-ing over the Pack, 1 have been encouraged, by the enthusiasm of the Brownies
and the -support of the "Hums who are .going to help me in the summer when I'm on my own.
Thank you also to Snowy :0wl who has been a great help. The Pack'still needs another
person to !help me permaiter.tly, starting on September 17th, especially as, since agreeing
;to, run the Pack,;.:i7iy-,husband has unexpectedly been posted to Zimbabwe for one year,
which means' that--1 will be joining him for: some of ,the! time. 1. shall be away for July

The Drama Group are having great fun rehearsing the hilarious comedy 'Outside Edge'
by Richard Harris. Set'--in, andfjust outside! a small cricket pavilion, it follows the
frustrations of captain,<- -Roger,,-. desperately trying to assemble a team against the
distractions of wife and girlfriend problems. Bob has trouble between wife and ex-wife;
Alex's gi rl-f ri end 'has hysterics; ,.ci ly Dennis flirts indiscriminately while Kevin
battles tc keep out of the rjncrcus depths of his wife's fur.,coat. Only Roger's stalwart
wife, Miriam, remains completely in control - until someone mentions - Dorking!

The last of. the Institute's activities in 1909 was the usual Christmas lunch, unusual
in that there was no formal meeting after it, just a pleasant time tc mingle with
friends, .including those who car,:e to represent other Institutes in the Chess Group.
l/e were then .entertained by Ivy Ower.'s dedicated ladies giving readings and songs.

One sad note among the festivit.as vas the announcement of the death of Doris Coleman,
who will be sadly missed. '
The FJew Year heralded a new-President, Rosemary Saunders and Secretary, Evelyn Claytcn.
Ann Trotmanj the retiring President,, sent a letter of thanks for a Speen Pottery .bowl,
a farewell present from the r.pmber.sj,, all of whom had enjoyed her three years in office.
The Christmas Bazaar was very Ki'.cce'.vsful, The Institute would like to thank everyone

There is a "U.I. Driver of the Year" competition which Lindsey Haubner has entered.

In March," as we were unable to meet in khe .Village Hall, Coleshill Cricket Club very

There was a variety cf subjects by :.ur speakers, • first of whom was Mr Glover, a Civil
Engineer who gave a fascinating inrii.,ght: into the work itwclved in building the Channel
Tunnel. I!rs v/at,son spoke about her trj.p .to Katmandu, and fir Lindsey recounted the
work cf the John. Groom 'Foundation fur- the Disabled, and presented a film of how an
accident victim who became paralyse-1, was housed by the Foundation in specially ••
adapted accommodation, and was able to regain her independence. : •'" -. .-
Activities, past and to come, include play readings, a visit to Windsor Theatre^
walks led by Ann Trotman,.the v/eekly craft group meetings and a visit to a brewery. -

We learned recently that our pond is one of the last two habitats, in Britain of the
Starfruit (Damasonium alisma). This quite insignificant looking plant has a very
curious life-cycle: its- seeds remain dormant in the mud at the bottom of ponds, and
•ronly germinate when the pond dries out and the mud 'is exposed. Then it can only
flower,.and set seed when the pond is full again. : .
Consequently cur efforts ,to keep the pond full last year were not helpful to Danaspnium!"
Th:ey "were undertaker, to safeguard the mallard ducklings from predators; but mallard
are not a threatened species, and Damascnium emphatically is. We are custodians
of a great rarity, arid, pleas to refill the pcnd in future will fall on deaf ears -
even if tho Hater Company allows it again,'which is very unlikely. Ue must also be

The Cricket Season is creeping up on us once more. The weather has been kind to us the
last few weekends and working parties have gathered arid work has started in preparing:
the ground and pavillieh for the 'new season.1 -Although the work never really stops
especially with a groundsmafi 1 i ke :Vi c Baldwin who not only puts in a lot cfc hard work ::
throughout the summer but can very of ten-'be fo'und at the ground working, on the square "• i
or maintaining equipment through the winter months. • . • .
Unfortunately, we received some storm damage to the-reef whi.ch brought down the
ceilings in the bar and to'ilets. "hat a mess! Hopefully work will be completed
this next week. Luckily we were still able-to offer our hospitality to the Ladies
of the U.I. for their ilarch meeting. - ' . '
Graham Pyle has stood down as Chairman this season after working extromely hard for
.the Club during his spell in the "Chair" and, as they say, behind every successful
man chere stands a good woman and this proved to be the case as Lynda certainly gave
her all working long and hard for the club. Both are staying actively involved. A
difficult act tc follow. Tony Barber has been elected tc take over as Chairman.
Stuart Watson who has been our Club Captain for quite a while is getting married
in June so decided not to stand for re-election. Stuart will still carry on playing.
Shaun Cremin has been elected as Club Captain. Good luck tc Tony and Shaun.
This season we are looking forward to playing league cricket on Saturdays, Club
Cricket or: Sundays and we have once again entered the Norsk Hydro National Village
Competition as well as the usual mid-week knock—cut competitions.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all cur Vice Preside::ts for their
continued support. It is very much appreciated.
