My dear Friends,
Again I would like to wish all of you a very happy Christmas and hope
that you will :be able to hav<3 your family with you, or you with them, so
that there may be the joy and ha.ppj.ness v/hich only true family life can

I hope to see most of yc;.: a.* Ohutycn 'that -dajre It is important, and
necessary, that we should thank God for all the good th.lr.gs in life, and
especially at Christmas to say. thank you for his Love and Care in, sending
Jesus to show us the true* vaiu.es of life, arid how important .true love and
friendship is.
At Christmas, as a+ no other time,, we think of our friends,, .We also
remember the friends we used't;o haves Some'are no longer in this World,
but others we have allowed to drift away. I suppose the cost of postage and
Christmas Cards have had sbmethiag to "do with it, but I feel there are few
things worth doing at Christmas better than making an attempt; jbo.,rec.aptttre
those old relationships„ It is well worth trying to get into touch again
with Some old friends of whoa you have heard so little in the last few years.
As we get older we make less friends, so let us stay close to our real old
friends. . \
Remember also that Jesus is a constant companion and friend.

HOLY BAPTISM
On 17 July 1983 Sophie Caroline, daughter of David Gordon and Ann Clayden LOVE
of The. Wattles, Magpie Lane, Coleshill.
On 6 November 1983 Thomas Giles, son of James Joseph and Melanie CLARKE of
Copper Cottage, Village Road, Coleshill.
HOLY MATRIMONY
On 24 September 1983 Robert Peter GRIFFITHS, son of Mr and Mrs Griffiths,
Magpie Lane, Coleshill, was married to Janet Rosita Elizabeth Mossman,
daughter of Mr and Mrs Mossman of Chalfont St Peter. The reception was held
at Coleshill Village Hall and the honeymoon spent in Wiltshire, They are
now living in Widmer End.
IK MEMORIAM
John JAMIESON died on 24 August 1983 after a long illness, aged 74 years. He
came to live in Coleshill with his family in 1955 and made many friends. He
worked at Luckings Farm as Farm Manager until he retired in 1978 when he moved
to Winchmore Hill. He leaves a wife, Violet, and two sons, Hugh and John.
Our deepest sympathy goes to all his family.
Mr John Harrison. As we go to press we learn, with much regret, of the death
of John Harrison, whose family lived for many years at Bowers Farm, and were
largely instrumental in giving Coleshill its first village hall - of which
he himself was a trustee. John later moved to Ongar Hill Cottage, which he
built, and subsequently to Winchmore Hill, where he died on November 10th.
We extend our sympathy to his widow„
HARVEST SUPPER
Tests prove - as they say in the ads - that if you want to get at the sweet
table without having a traffic jam you can*t seat more than 120 people for
dinner in the Village Hall, So it was 120 strong that we sat down on
30th September to marvel, for the umpteenth time, how it could be done for the
money.
Awe-struck thanks to Dumpy Swerling and her team. Greedy thanks, too, to the
sweet-makers — anybody who was present will know why it was so important to
be able to get at the sweets table5 everything there was made by Coleshill
ladies in Coleshill kitchens.
It was a happy evening, as it always is; ,but one sad break with tradition
must be recorded. There was no entertainment by the Choir. This was because
of an acute shortage of adult sopranos. So, if anybody would like to join in
next year, please let John Trench know. We could do with one more bass too.

The last meeting of the summer term was a challenge to the Patrols.. Each'""."" ""
Patrol had £1.50 to produce a two, course:meal cooked on a camp.fire. .
During the summer holiday, the Guides were asked to collect,an ,assortment of
grasses suitable for painting-or spraying for use as -table decorations at
Christmas. Also at the end of July-, four Guides, Ruth Bayley, Victoria Hesford,
Elizabeth Timms and Kate Andrews^, .attended the week's summer camp organised'by
Mrs Griffiths held at Blacklahds Farm-, East Grinstead. :
Twelve Guides returned for the Autumn term, in September to plan a. busy programme
up to Christmas. One evening each .Guide gave a three minute talk on the .hobby,
of their choice with varied and interesting results, while Mrs Ghalwin and
Mrs Timms helped with Corn Dollies at another meeting. Hallowe'en Night fell
on a Guide evening this year so we celebrated with a competition for the. best
'Hat' or 'Lantern', followed by Hallowe'en games and food.
New simplified Guide handbooks came out in September which will challenge the
girls during their time as Guides.
Two Guides, Nicola Axon. and Alison Mead have gained their Collector's'Badge .
while Alison Mead achieved the .Horsewoman Badge. Ruth, Bayley. achieved her '

We were invited to attend Pack Holiday in July and Nickola Brown, Sophie Dening,
Laura Harvey and Amanda Stratford accompanied by Brown Owl, were pleased to
spend a week at Boreham Wood with the 1st, Amersham Common Pack. . ..
We attended Family Service-in. October and were delighted to be allowed the use
of the school playground during the summer for our meetings.
We wish to thank Mr and Mrs Tilley of ,the Village Stores for their generous gift
of the Brownie Magazine each week. :... -: .

COLESHILL CLUB '• - - . : ,.=, :
The Coleshill Club re—opened in Octoo'er 1982 after the new hall was-: completed
with an open meetingo In November a Bring .& Buy was held to help with funds.
It was with great sadness we heard of the passing of Mr .Hazell, .one of our
staunch members.'. ' . . . . ' , •
In January we enjoyed a New Year's lunch and our village school children
entertained us in the afternoon. In February Mr and Mrs L Bristow showed some
very interesting, slides of Scotland,, In March Mrs Pat Emblow delighted us
with her decorations for Easter goodies. In April - games and quizzes; we
were also invited to the Brownies' 10th anniversary.
In May we very much enjoyed Holmer Green Baptist Ladies' Choir,"wHen we invited
our friends from Winchrnore Hill to join us. Owing to illness our invitation
to Mr and Mrs Weedon had to be cancelled.
We welcomed Mr and Firs Maynard in July with films of their trip to Canada, when
we were pleased to see Mr and'Mrs Farmer on film in their new home. We had a
very helpful talk from Police Constable Berry on crime prevention in August,
and in September we had films of Richard Br.iers on The Good Life and .others.
We had our AGM in October and also an 'interesting talk by Miss Boston on her
trip some years ago to Palestine? also a Bring and Buy in aid of our New Tear
luncho After each meeting a welcome tea is provided.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped us through;the past year. New
members would be made very welcome. Happy Christmas to'you all. . ....

COLESHILLjG.E. FIRST SCHOOL
During the Summer term, the Bucket. .Theatre-performed" a play about the work of the
Police. Ashley Green School and a class from Little Missenden School^Joined-.us.—-
We held our School Fete and Sports, and later our Summer Concert, and joined
Ashley Green First School for their Sports Day. . ;
We visited Mrs Dening's garden for -games and refreshments one afternoon.
Several children won prizes.,at both Coleshill and Winchmore Hill Village Shows,
In September, our Harvest Festival was well attended and £20.00 raised by
the sale of produce for the National Children's Home.
We were able to send over £30.00 to BBONT (Berks, Bucks and Oxon Naturalists*
Trust), following a sponsored leaf collection.
CHRISTMAS BAZAAR - SATURDAY 3rd DECEMBER - 10.30 am
CHRISTMAS CONCERT - TUESDAY 13th DECEMBER - 7.00 pn
Everyone is cordially invited to both these events, which will be held in the
School.

MAGPIE CLUB,
We had a varied programme during the summer holidays. We started off with a
cricket match against the children in which the mothers were beaten very soundly.
Six carloads of us drove to Thorpe.Park, this is a recreation area which had
been developed on reclaimed land at Staines. There is plenty for everyone to
do there. Some of us had a picnic at Thorpe Park Farm where we found lots of
very hungry goats who wanted to share our picnic with uslll
The village outing this year was to Bournemouth where we all had a very good . .:•
day with plenty of sunchine and people !!f!

The under 7's had a party in the Valentines garden which was well attended.
We had two picnics, one to the River Chess which is always a great favourite,
and the other on Coleshill Common followed by swimming at the Valentines and
Fergusons.
If you are new to the village and have children please come along and join
in with our activities.

MAGPIE FELLOWSHIP . ,
Magpie Fellowship still continues to meet every other Friday during term time
in the village school for children aged 4 — 8 years. This time we have
re—arranged our groups owing to a larger number of younger children.
Our social event of the year was the annual barbecue held at the cricket ground
in July, It was a very happy occasion, joined by families and friends,
Mr and Mrs Hicken and Doug and Jessie Pusey. ••• The children played rounders
and games followed by sausages kindly donated by Roger Pusey and goodies
made by the mothers and friends went down very well, not to mention the doughnuts!
Gallons of orange juice was consumed on this scorching day.~'Tri"ze"-"givi'ng" -—•—•----•
rounded off the afternoon and Mr Hickin presented them. Neil Valentine won
the prize for the over 9'sj Elizabeth Eardley was:First and Nicola Barrett
and Jeremy Hankinson runners up for the 5-8 age group. Then James Richardson
first and Naomi Hankinson and Katherine Sadley runners up in the 2-6 age group.
We then said our goodbyes and thanks to Celia Hankinson for her valuable
contribution to Magpie Fellowship, and she was presented with a garden token
from the children, showing our appreciation. .

VILLAGE ALLOTMENTS .. .
As the village allotments have not been fully cultivated in recent years,
the owner of the land wishes to take it 'back into his possession. The future •
of the allotments will therefore be discussed at the Annual General Meeting
of the Parish Council in March 1984, to which members of the public are invited.
The date of the meeting will be published later.

We ••would -like ..'to thank all the people in Coleshill who let us become part of the
village. I would particularly like" to thank all the young people, Brownies,
Guides, Magpies, and. the school children with whom I worked and played, for ailthe

Our new address is: Park House, West Rasen, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire LN8 3LS,
so if anyone is this way there is always a welcome here.
On behalf of the Brownies, Mrs Stevens created and worked a superb, picture of
the Windmill, which the Br.ownies presented to me. It was the : first picture to
go up in this house. Very, .very many thanks to Mrs Stevens for her hours of
work, and to everyone who contributed towards it.
COLESHILL VILLAGE TENNIS TOURNAMENTThis
year's one day Tennis Tournament that was to be held on 28 May did not
unfortunately take place as a result of a very wet day which made most of the
courts unplayable. A few "friendly" games did take place in the afternoon,
but it was reported as being very "damp and cold". *
There were/therefore about fifty, very disappointed entrants who, it is hoped,
will be ready and willing to participate at next year's tournament.
However, despite only very little tennis being played, £122.05 was raise.d- u.~;
through the players' entrance fees, and half of this amount was passed to the
Village Hall Maintenance Fund and the other half to the Amersham "Help our
Hospital" Appeal. . .
Tournament organisers would like to thank the court owners who were most
generous in offering their courts for use in this event, and for the loyal
support of the entrants who failed to get on to a court that day.
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY • •' ••" '. . . ' : ..
We are not so much a society as an organising committee who counts the entire
village as its association. During the last year we.have, organised for your
entertainment an evening on pot plant care, a morning of flower arranging and,
of course, the Village Show, not forgetting .the.annual soaking by the village
pond known as the Green Fingers' Stall, ...
The Show especially held some surprises, starting with our guest, Paulirie Griffiths,
commencing the proceedings by playing *An English Country Garden' on her flute
after apologising for not being a complete village .band. The other surprise was
to see anything at all in the Hall when everyone we had spoken to previously
had told us that due to the drought they had 'nothing* in their gardens. Next
year we are considering the addition to the Show of a photpgr.aBhic,.s.©ctiant.-and •
possibly a summer 'Garden Open Day'; and if you have any further ideas, please
let us know. • ' " ' .'

COLESHILL WI
Coleshill WI held its Annual ..General Meeting in November. ' Members heard that
as a result of the fashion show held in October, £200 had been donated to
St Joseph's Hospice, Berkhamst'0d;
After the annual reports, a presentation, was made to the retiring President,
Mrs Muriel Jones, and Mrs Pearce gave a warm vote of thanks on behalf of the
members for the humour and wit with which she has guided the Institute over
the past three yearso • • '•• :
Mrs Betty Joseph was elected as the new President,^and Mrs Pat Emblow takes
over as the new Secretary. Mrs Trixie Brown continues as Treasurer, an office
she has held for many years with success, as the sound finances of the Institute
Show; with Mrs Ann Cox as Programme Secretary. Other Committee Members are:..
Mrs Collier, Mrs Hall, Mrs Ovington, Miss Trotman, Mrs Whyte, Mrs Woolacotto
Details of the forthcoming CHRISTMAS BAZAAR, to be held on SATURDAY 26 NOVEMBER
in the Village Hall, were finalised, Mrs Jean Archer will be opening the
proceedings at 2.30 pm,
