Th^ Rector*s Letter
My dear Friends, ... ...
It is almost unbelievable that Christmas is upon us again; but then it is the
most wonderful and joyful time in the whole year, so it is very welcome. I think
it is particularly welcome in the world today because whether the world realises
it or not, it needs Jesus very badly.
If Jesus could just appear in the world, how wonderful it would be, and the
millions who find life an aimless thing would have someone who they could trust,
and on whom they could pin their faith, hopes and aspirations.
You see, I think a lot of people have forgotten about Jesu's,' and a lot of
others have ftever heard about Him., Those of us who go to Church, to worship and
pray regularly, know very well that there is really no need for Jesus to make a
personal appearance in the world. He is already here* Christmas tells us that-
But why do we neglect Him so? Even if we do worship Him, and pr.ay to Him regularly,
,do we ever think of giving up time to listen to Him? As with any other friends we
must listen to what He has to say. Perhaps a time of listening'(some people call
it meditation) may make; Christmas much more real, if we start listening now. There
is far too much talking in the world at the moment, so let us listen, and give
Jesus a chance.

IN MEMORIAM
Many in Coleshill will hear with great regret of the death of the Rev. J«HoB<> Elkerton
last September. Mr. Elkerton came to Coleshill shortly after the end of the war
and was Priest-in-Charge at All Saints' until 1952 when he moved to Brill and a
few years later became Vicar of Buckingham., Sadly, ill health forced him to retire
early» He made a great contribution to the life in Coleshill, He was an excellent
musician and took a leading part in the performance of "Trial by Jury" at the party
on All Saints1 Day which was celebrating the Centenary of the Church,, Those who
were young when he was here will remember his zeal and gaiety and the interest he
took in their welfare. Our deepest sympathy goes to Mrs, Elkerton and her two sons.
The village heard with great regret of the sudden death of Mrs„ Christine HARRISSON
on 5"th July. She and her husband came to live in Coleshill in 1919 a-n<l they will
be remembered for the many ways in which they helped the village. In particular
they were the prime movers in helping to provide the Nissen Hut which is still in
use as our Village Hall and invaluable for the social life of the village.
Mrs. Harrisson will also be remembered for her share in organising the "Merrythought
Concert Party", of which she was the pianist.
We extend our sympathy to her son and his wife and daughter,,
It was with great sorrow that Villagers heard of the death last August of
Mrs, Ellen JERRAM. She was born in the village which was her home for almost all
of her 74 years, and her cheerfulness and helpfulness is sadly missed. As a child
she attended the Village School and later on was a valuable and long-standing
member of the Church Choir. Her absence from the Choir was greatly felt when
eventually she had to give up because her health prevented her from singing as
she wished to do, Mrs. Jerram was also also a very active member of the Coleshill
Choral Society and took part in the performances of "Trial by Jury" and also in
performances held by the Amersham Music Festival, including Gluck's Orpheus in the
Underworld, conducted by Herbert Howells. She often spoke of-the'fun-the-ladies
of the Choral Society had when they visited the Old Parsonage to practice under the
guidance of the late Miss Baxter,
It would be a splendid thing, in memory of all those who gave of their time and
talents for the Village, if such a Choral Society could be re-formed.
The sudden death on October 10th of Grant PROTHERO at the age of 48 was a great
shock to his wife Mickey and son Huw. The cremation on October 24th was attended
by many people who knew Grant, not only from the vi11age: where he lived and Bushey
Heath where he was a respected pharmacist for 21 years, but also the friends with
whom he shared his enthusiasm for sailing. He will be sadly missed. Our sincere
sympathy goes to his wife and son.

It is with great regret that we announce the death on Saturday, 22nd October,
of Mr Murray SLADEo
Mr Slade was one of the 9 sons and 2 daughters of Mr James Slade and was born in
the cottage next door to the old MFleur-de-Lys"o His grandfather, his father and
one of his brothers, Mr Frank Slade, were all blacksmiths ih"Coleshill in, the old
Forge Cottage,, Murray was .a brilliant cricketer and at one time 'eight brothers
were all playing for ,Coleshill° Later Murray'played for old Amersham .CoCo, for
which he scored seven centuries and in one famous match against Kings Langley he
bowled and took all ten wicketSo . He was a member of one of'the 'oldest and best
known families in jColeshill and will be sorely missed. He leaves a widow, daughter
and two small grand-daughters, to whom we extend our sympathy»
ARMISTICE SUNDAY - 13th NOVEMBER •
The procedure and timing will be as on previous occasions, making certain that
all are>•.gathered at the Memorial before starting the prayers there,,

This year, as usual, we will be Carol Singing two nights running, Tuesday 20th
and Wednesday 21st December„ On both nights we shall start from the Church at
7.30 P°m° Please come with a torch, a strong constitution, and a parent if you
are small!•„

THE:HARVEST SUPPER . , :
This year's Harvest Supper was on October 7th0 It began with a glass of sherry
and general conversation, after which the guests took their places around the
tableso A delicious tongue and ham salad had been excellently prepared by
MrSo Pusey and the.Mothers1 Union,, .Red and white wine were also served° The
main course was followed by a varied selection of puddings contributed by ladies
of the village. This was followed by coffee,,
After the meal, the All Saints' Church Choir, led'by Penny Weedon, on her organ,
entertained us 'with a few songs and led the community singingo Penny then sang
a delightful song which she had herself composed and it was duly encored. The
evening concluded with dancing and Auld Lang Syne0
Many thanks are due to Mr.0 Woolacott, who. compered the evening so eloquently, to
the choir, and to Penny, who entertained us, and - as always - to Mrs„ Pusey and
her devoted band of helpers -

On Thursday, 6th October, over 150 people came to the Village Hall to watch a
Slower Demonstration by Mr. Fred Wilkinson in aid of the N.S.P.C.C., Mr. Wilkinson,
who is a Director of Constance Spry Ltd,, not only created some beautiful arrangements
but also gave us all many simple tips to help us with our own flower
decorations.
After tea, Mr. Wilkinson picked the lucky winners of the raffle and ten delighted
people left the Hall armed with a vase of flowers!
On behalf of my Committee, I iirould like to thank everyone who helped to support
us and make the afternoon such a success, I have been overwhelmed by the letters,
telephone calls etc,. I have received from people who so enjoyed the Demonstration
that I hope I shall be able to persuade Mr. Wilkinson to come back to Coleshill
next year and give us another Demonstration.

COLESHILL G.E. FIRST SGHOOL
Over a hundred parents and friends attended a Summer Concert in Coleshill First
School on 6th July,, -The children gave a programme of music, songs, poems and
plays. The Rev» L, Hickin. spcke about the reiirards of effort and the happy
atmosphere in the school*
Mrs, Eickin presented bocks to Lucy Hatch, David Jainieson, Amanda Lee and
Jason Munro, who will be joining other schools in September. Amanda Lee presented
a bouquet to Mrs, Hickin. 'The staff were thanked by Mrs. A, Bayley and received
posies of roses, carnations and sweetpeas on behalf of the children, presented
by Adrian Dean, Lucy Hat oh, Christopher Hill and Sarah Allnutt.
The Harvest Thanksgiving Service in School was attended by many parents and friends.
The Rev. D. Carrette spoke about the many people involved in bringing the harvest
to the table,, Sale of the produce after the Service raised £15 for the National
Children's Home,
Green Shield stamps were collected for the Red Cross appeal. The final total
was equivalent to. just over, one full book per child.
The interior of the School is brighter due to the efforts of Frank Creber
and friend - our thanks to them. We feel less gratitude towards the unwelcome
visitors who daubed pain* outside the school towards the end of September.
The Parents and Friends Group are holding a Coffee Morning in School on Saturdayt
J^th^JJovguibor.. We hope to replace the now decrepit greenhouse quite- soon.
Preparations "for the Christmas Concert are in the early stages now, and we look

WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
On August 3rd the W.I. entertained a party of 40 deaf and dumb pensioners from
Acton. After a delicious lunch they visited Mr* and Mrs. Woolacottfs garden,
wandered round the Village, and returned to the Village Hall for a display of
children's dancing from a Dancing School in Reading. Before going home, each
with a posy of flowers, they were served with tea and many good cakes, scones,
sandwiches, etc., to sustain them on their return journey, and all enjoyed a
really good day.

1st COLESHILL BROWNIE GUIDE (ALL SAINTS), PACK
This term we have been joined by Sarah Holland, a newcomer to the village.
Also Victoria Hesford, to whose joining we have been looking forward.
Clare Wilson is a new Sixer with Alexandra Hesford as her Second and Julie Ellis,
Paula Mead's new Second. Elaine Timms gained her Writer's badge last term and
Alexandra Hesford, Animal Lover's Badge. Wendy Payne has gained her Pony Lover's
badge.
We performed the Lion Game at the Local Association A.G.M. and soon we shall
be practicing our Christmas entertainment for parents and friends on December 5th»

1st COLESHILL GUIDE COMPANY
Our most exciting news is the fact that Mrs. Antosiewicz has joined us as a
Unit Helper.
Elaine Timms and Susie Williams have come up from Brownies and will be enrolled
by the time this reaches print. Several Guides have achieved their Friend to
Animals* badge, Beryl Smith has a Poultry Farmer's badge and Julie Edwards a
Collector's badge.
We have planned to have an outing to see the Shire Horses at Littlewick Green
during half term and are looking forward to a talk on the Artist's badge from
Mrs. Williams and a flower arranging talk and demonstration by Mrs. Maynard.

The Coleshill ClVb held a Garden Party in July at the home of Mrs. Coales, Grove
Mill. We had a very happy afternoon and a most delicious tea. In August we had
another small Brink and Buy and the A.G.M. was held in September. It was announced
at this meeting thaV our Treasurer, Mr. Kennerell, would be retiring owing to other
commitments, and Mr. Thorn, of Potters Meadow, accepted the post and was duly electe
in his steado In her address the Chairman gave a brief resume of the past year's
activities and thanked Mr\ Kennerall for his loyal support of the Glub during the
last three years. The meeting ended with tea, games and a raffle. Dep,

MAGPIE CLUB
We arranged a full and varied programme for the summer holidays„- .—-.;.,
This included a cricket match, for which we thank the Coleshill Cricket Club
for the loan of their grpundo The girls played rounders while the.cricket was
in progress and we ended up with an exciting mixed rounders match, . -. .
We rambled from Goleshill to Brentford Grange'Farm where we barbecued sausages
for sixty» We; had a picnic tea and games for the under sevens at Grove Millo
Our 'Help Others Day' took the form of the girls cleaning the Church and the
boys clearing some of the weed from the pondo The local press came along and
took a picture of us at work!
The weather unfortunately wasn't very kind to us when we arranged Swimming
Sports and we had to cancel them on .two occasions»•" 'Our football-match didn't
produce a 'Pele* but an enjoyable time was had by all.
The Disco .proved to be a successful evening and ninety-six children danced the
night away while the helpers went away nearly deafened!
We rounded off the holidays with an Open Air Service in the grounds of the
, School taken by the Rev» David Carrette. Our collection was given to the
old people of Rushymead f or their extension to a sun lounge„

COLESHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY - 32nd ANNUAL SHOW
To our great relief Saturday, 3rd September, unlike the"days preceding it, was
a beautiful day. Soon the Village Hall was filled with exhibits.
The Show was opened by Mrs, Honor Coales, whose welcoming remarks reminded us
that "All good thing around us are sent from Heaven above", Hannah Roberts
presented a basket of flowers to her and Mrs, Coales later presented the cups
to Mrs0 Rita Harm for her vegetables in the Villagers1 Section? to Mrs,, Diana
Heimann for the Open Class vegetables; to Mrs,, Jackie Ferguson for her floral
art arrangements andt also for her flowers.; to Mrs. Di Hesford for her preserves;
to Mrso Kitty Cossey for her baking, and to Kirn Ferguson who won .the Children's Cup.
The cup for the best single rose was won by Mr» Ernest Post and Mrs, Louise Edwards
won the cup for the best handmade article in the Senior Citizen's Class»
The auction, ably conducted by Mr-, Gareth Griffiths, raised over £30 for our
Show funds« .'
Whilst the quality of the flowers and vegetables could not be expected to compare
with those of other summers, the efforts of everybody who staged exhibits were
greatly appreciated as they made the Show as great a spectacle as it has been
in other years,

COLESHILL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY - Visit to Harkness Roses Ltd,
June 25th started bright and brittle. Once on the coach in no time at all we
were well on the way and it was time to unwrap our picnic lunches„
On our arrival Mrs. Harkness welcomed us and remembered our Rose Evening, -She
took us to the glass houses where the propagation takes place and the forcingis
done for Chelsea Flower Show, From here we were attracted by the red coats
of the Welwyn Garden City Silver Band who were supporting the Hitchin Show,
We walked down to. the rose garden and smelt the scent of roses "en masse", but
ohl it was so cold that we went inside to see how Hitchin compared with Goleshill
when it comes to a.Show. Yes, the floral decorations were on a par with ours,
we had thoughts about hanging baskets - and the cup of tea was very welcome.
Next door was the Rose Shop and outside the display ground, and so we made our
purchases.
Our visit revived for us the beauty of Harkness roses, their shape, their colour
and their perfume.
Maybe we will look forward to visiting another horticultural centre next year!

OGLESHILL CRICKET CLUB DIMMER DANCE
On Friday, 21st October 1977V at the Bellhouse. Hotel., -.ColeshillL Cricket jQlub
held what is hoped to be"an"annual"Dinner Dance, this' one being the first one
of its type in 32 years' memory of one of its members. It was very well
attended. Among the guest list was tiie Club President Mr. Jack Adams and
his wife.
1977 was also the first year that the-, Club has. fielded a youth side: which was
entered in the .Mid Bucks Youth League and in their first season carried.off
the cup. The presentation was made by Mr.. P Crosby, Secretary of the Mid Bucks
League, to Andrew Tilson, Captain of the Youth Side,, .•
The guest of honour, Mr. S0E<, York of High Wycombe C0C0 and Bucks CoC0Co, after
giving a very entertaining speech, presented the season's awards to Mr. D. Baldwin,
1st Xf batting, Mr. ;Ko Edwards, 1st XI bowling, Mrt Ho Palmer, (received by
Mr. A. Barber),. 2nd XI batting, Mr. G. Sinfield. 2nd XI..bowling, and finally
Tom Kartell Jnr., single wicket competition winner. Incidentally Tom .is the
youngest player to' w i n this award. ' . ' . - '
Other speakers included Mr. R.L0 Tilson, Chairman and 1st XI Club Captain, and
Mr. KoAo' Edwards, vice—captain 1st XI.
This very successful function was rounded off by dancing to the Pipers.
I have also been asked to point out that the Club will be holding their A0GoM.
on Wednesday, 9th November 1977 at Coleshill Village Hall.

The recent absence of news about Magila has been caused by a. parcel with a
full report and photographs going astray in the post! I now hear that Harri,
the recent occupant of the Coleshill cots has returned to his father who has
married again and can now look after the little boy. The new baby in our cot
is destitute. He was left at the door of the hospital when only a day old and
it has been impossible to trace his parents/ He has been baptized John Martin
and is doing well and growing fast. '""'..'
Expenses are a cause for anxiety but the Sisters now have a small farm with
400 chicks and some goats so they are supplied with eggs and milk for the
children. They have also had bags of beans and oats and tins of butter from
the European Common Market! Sister sends most grateful thanks to all the .
kind friends in Coleshill who have helped to pay the bills.
jj^ow - a begging note - Ghris^tmas is coniing! Can you help with a, .few pence .for
our Christmas gift for the Motherless Babies' Unit at Magila - and a little
special gift for our baby, John Martin? I shall be most grateful for any help
you can give to these children in need.

GREEN SHIELD STAMPS - In spite of difficulties there has been a generous
******************* response to the appeal for these stamps, which are used
to help the work at Magila Hospital and the Polio Clinic at Kwa Mkono. The
collection has been greatly helped by a friend who handed in the stamps she
had received when she bought a new carpet! Many thanks to all who have helped.
