Pastoral Letter
Most of you already know that I am leaving Coleshill in the middle of December
to return to New Zealand. The decision to leave has not been an easy one and
there are as many good reasons for staying as there are. for going. But the
offer of a challenging job at home, after over ten.years abroad has to be
considered seriously. ', . .,; -.. .
My new post is unique firstly in that it is sponsored by all the major Churches
in New Zealand, 'including the Roman Catholic Church, and secondly, in that its
primary focus is not on the life of the Church but on the life of the,Nation.
'My task will be to try to discern God's activity within society at large by
listening to what the various "people's movements" are saying; that is, by
listening.to young people in communes, to native groups trying to regain the use
of tribal lands, to pressure and protest groups such as those trying to put an
end to nuclear testing in the South Pacific, and so on. Subsequently my task
will be to. encourage in such groups an awareness of the :global dimension to their
struggles; and to help the Churches understand the implications of these
struggles for the Church's lifestyle.
The job is obviously both exciting and- daunting. Although I will officially
be known by the rather grand title "Director of the Ecumenical Secretariat
for Human Development",,, that;.does ;not imply that I shall be sitting in an office.
Indeed, for the first, years-, I shall have, neither an office nor a home, but
will be travelling extensively. ,; :v
It is nevertheless with sadness that I leave Coleshill, and I would like to
take this opportunity ,of thanking you all for the kindness, generosity and
hospitality you have shared with me while I have: been here. Coleshill will
always be a special place to. me and I look forward.to meeting you again whenever
I visit Europe. Should any of you be in New Zealand, I hope you would contact

Text of the Primates' Pastoral Letter
The Archbishops of Canterbury and York hope that you will regard this letter as a
personal one from themselves to you. They are asking that it be read in all
churches because they believe that there is a great body of seriously-minded men
and women who are deeply concerned not only about the economy of our nation but
about its spiritual condition.
During the last few days you will probably have shared through the media something
of what vie have been trying to say at this critical .time. We have posed such
questions as these - "What sort of society are we looking for?" and "What kind
of people are needed for the creation of this society?"
We' Christians believe that G-od reigns .and that he cares about the nations.
We believe that he has demonstrated his concern in the life, teaching, death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ.
We believe that his Spirit is operative today, doing his recreative work in
individuals and groups.
If, however, a responsible society is to come into being, everyone must realise
that he counts and that his contribution matters. The time has therefore come
when we feel it is our duty to call all Christian people.
1. To pray steadily, persistently and intelligently for our nation.
2. To think seriously about our society in the light of what we
believe, asking such questions as "What sort of society do we
want?" and "What sort of people do we need in order to
achieve it?"
3- To co-operate with Christians of every allegiance, and with
fifty others who are willing to be associated with us, so as
to influence society in a positive and helpful way.
4- To live out the faith we profess, that God reigns and that
God cares.
We therefore invite you as members of your local congregation to take serioaisiy ^>
God's call to God's people in God's world, and to go on and work out in further
detail in the next few months what this will mean for yourself, your home, your
parish and the community where you live and work.

NEWSLETTER
At the end of the year, the Editor would like to thank most profusely all
those wonderful people who have contributed various reports and in
particular to Mrs. Plumridge, to Mrs. Nicholls and to Mrs. Stubbings who
undertake the typing and the duplicating so willingly, and to the
distributors of the final product. The Editor would like to express
regrets for his own errors which have a habit of creeping in.
HARVEST FESTIVAL SUPPER ..
Our Harvest Festival Supper was held once.again in the Village Hall on Friday,
10th October.
On entering the Village Hall a cheerful and colourful sight met our eyes.- The
Mothers' Union led by Mrs. Jesse Pusey had produced a striking display of flowers
and coloured napkins on the white tablecloths, A wide variety of home-made
puddings and sweets had also been donated by people throughout Coleshill.
The first half of the entertainment 'which followed was organised by Penny Weedon.
It opened with our choir giving us a light hearted review of Samson's career
entitled "Cantata on Sams.on". Then Pauline Griffiths and Penny Weedon playing
'flute and piano respectively gave us a movement familiar yet difficult to place -
until suddenly it developed into "When the Saints come marching in". Finally, the
same performers with an extra instrument - Penny's voice - gave us a song on
an Old Testament theme, which stressed the romantic side.
The second part of the evening was arranged by Mrs. Ann Trench and proved rather
more energetic for a lot of the audience. Eight members of the Lucy Clarke
Scottish Country Dance Club kindly came up to demonstrate and lead us in Scottish
dances. One of their number, Wesley Harry, introduced them and explained the
dances we were to perform. These included Dashing White Sergeant and an eightsome.
Max Trench provided the music. So popular were these dances that they continued
even after the evening had officially ended.
The evening was brought to a close when Mrs. Jesse Pusey was pesented with, a
bouquet by Lois Plumridge. This was a token of the gratitude we in Coleshill
feel towards her.

A PATTERN OF HUNDREDS
Congratulations are extended to Louie Edwards and to Violet Darvill upon their
splendid contribution to "A Pattern of Hundreds", a record compiled by members
of the Buckinghamshire Federation of Women's Institutes.
They deal with life in Coleshill some fifty years ago. Amongst many other
interesting matters they tell us that, in those carefree days, a local farmer
brought round milk in large-churns. He carried the milk to the doorstep in a
large can, with a half-pint measure inside, and then ladled it into a jug.
This would scarcely suit the hygiene minded people today.

best wishes and flowers during her recent illness.

THE COLESHILL CLUB
The September meeting was our first A.G.M. and we were able to look back upon a
very pleasant and companionable year. The retiring officers and committee were
re-elected for a further year and Mr. Jack Cossey joined us on the Committee.
•Je thank all those who have worked so hard to make this venture a success.
The 'Open Meeting" in October included a well supported Bring' and Buy Stall and
ah amusing competition arranged by Mrs. Elizabeth Harvey. This required us to
identify members of the club from snaps and photographs taken some time ago -
not a very easy task.
Tv7inchmore Hill Thursday Club invited us to join them for their 2nd anniversary
meeting on 6th November. The afternoon began with a most hilarious hour1s
entertainment by Charles Barlow, a conjurer, and finished with a lovely birthday
tea. We all thank "Jinchnore Hill for their splendid hospitality.

1st COLESHILL GUIDE COMPANY
Our recruits, Jane Mileham, Nicola Reavey and Kay Speller are now enrolled Guides.
We have a new Patrol, the Blue Tits, with Rachel '7ege as Patrol Leader and Joanna
Swerling as her Second. Jane Swerling is the new Second of the Kingfishers.
Rachel T/ege has gained her Health Badge.
Mrs. Chenevix-Trench came one evening to teach us Country Dancing and hopes to
come again.
Some Guides helped at the Village Hall Jumble Sale and also at the local
Association of Girl Guides and.Brownies at their A.G.M. in Amersham.
On Monday, 8th December, at 5.45 p.m. in the Village Hall, together with the
Brownies, we have an Open Evening, and plan to have a Y/inter Pare Stall, Guide
proceeds for the Church Fabric Fund. DO COME AND VISIT US.
Guides' parents kindly held a cake stall on Saturday, 15th November, for Guide
funds and raised £19.20. -,7e are very grateful and thank all concerned.
•,7e hope to take an active part in Parish Communion .on Sunday, 30th November,
St. Andrews' Day. Also to carol sing at Coleshill House near Christmas.

BUS TIME-TABLE
A list giving the revised times of the 398 Service is enclosed with this Newsletter.
These alterations are made to achieve essential operating economies and to offset
some of the considerable losses incurred on these services. The Buckinghamshire
County Council who have the power to grant loans to keep rural bus services
operating have been consulted about these changes and are in agreement with them.

BROWNIE MOTES
Our recruit did not materialise and we are still 15 Brownies.
October 17th saw us acting "In a Cottage in a Wood1 for the local Association
A.-G-.M. in Amersham.
We devoted one meeting to acting and another meeting we spent our time tying or
being tied 'up with string, knots, knitting and the like.
We are having a coffee evening and Bring and Buy Sale, (with the Guides) on
Monday, 8th December. Our money is to be split two ways between Pestalozzi and *
the R.S.P.C.A. Everyone will be welcome.
November 30th should see all of us in Church at 9-30 a.m. December 1st is the
last meeting of the term, when we shall have a party and our first meeting in
1976 will be January 12th.
We have five children on our waiting list. If there is anyone who knows of any
girl who would like to join us and has attained 7 years, we shall be pleased to
see her.

INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY WEEK-END
On 9th November for the first time Coleshill took part in the above event, which
is sponsored by Churches of various denominations in Amersham, twice a year.
We invited students of many nationalities to visit the Village for a walk and
then back»to the Village Hall to enjoy a wonderful tea provided and served by
W.I. Members and other friends in the Village.
It • was a most friendly and heart-warming 'party' which v/as much enjoyed by the
students and their-hosts and hostesses, (140 in all).
Great appreciation has been expressed by the Committee from.the Churches and I
would like to extend a big 'Thank you' to those who gave up their Sunday afternoon
to help, and to walk, and also those who gave so generously in the way of cakes
and scones etc. ' -

FORTHCOMING MARRIAGE .
Murray and Rita Rann are delighted to announce that their daughter Pippa is
to be married to Prabhu Guptara in Delhi Cathedral on January 17th.
It .is hoped that Pippa and Prabhu will be in England for 2-3.years from next

A FEEZE COMPETITION
Here is.something to do in your spare time over•the Christmas holiday.
Our nation has been asked to consider seriously what kind of society is right
for both our own country and for other nations. What would be your plan for
a good society.
Three prizes are offered for the best answer to. that question, the answer
not exceeding 300 words in length. Entries will be divided into three groups.
A. Prom those under 16 years of age
B. From those between 16 and 25
C. From those over 25 . • •• ' .
Please put the appropriate letter on your paper together with your name and

A CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR THE BABIES AT MAGILA, HOSPITAL
We are hoping to send a small cheque for Christmas gifts for Hari. - the baby
in the Coleshill cot at Magila - and some of the other orphans.
If in these hard times you can spare a few pence, I shall be most grateful to
you and will send the money to Africa on your behalf.

WOMM'S, INSTITUTE A.G.M. 1 3.11 .75
This past year has seen a number of changes in our W.I. Firstly we were very
sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Powell-Price when she left to live in Devon. She
had been our Secretary, and is very much missed. Also we lost two of:our
keenest members - Mrs. How and Miss Boston who both died during the year.
At our A.G.M. Mrs Collier was voted to be our President for another year,
Mrs. Ovington and Mrs. Ebiblow are Vice Presidents, Mrs. Higgs is our new
Secretary and Mrs. Browne the Treasurer. We were pleased to welcome Miss
Sybil Boston and Mrs..Post back.to the committee. With three new members
this year our numbers add up to 53 with an average of 31 people attending our
monthly meetings.
During the year we have held a very successful bazaar, entertained a party of
deaf and dumb people to lunch and tea, held a sherry morning to celebrate the
Diamond Jubilee of the W.I. and had two coffee mornings. We have enjoyed our
outings very much - Saville Gardens, Windsor Theatre and the Tomorrow's
Heirlooms Exhibition which was held in London. Most.of our speakers have been
good and have covered a wide number of subjects. We still regularly do the
trolley service at Coleshill House and liushymead Old People's Home.
Looking back it has been a very successful year, and very enjoyable, and we
certainly look forward to another year of friendship and activity in our W.1.

COLESHILL CRICKET GLUE
Coleshill Cricket Club's 1st XI finished ninth, out of ten, in the Mid-Bucks
League. The 2nd XI finished last of ten in the Reserve Section of the same
league. In the knock-out competitions the 1st XI were put out by Prestwood
first time, whilst the 2nd XI lost to HoImer Green in the Reserve Final. On
Sundays, the two cups held by the Club were lost. The Jim Yfere Cup went to
Perm Street for the first time since its inception in 1970 and the Albert
Barnes Cup returned to Winchmore Hill after only 12 months with Coleshill. A
determined effort must be made to regain both trophies.
Pew players can look back on the season with much satisfaction. Fred Newton was
the most consistent batsman vdth a highest score of 48 and an average of 26.
Bowling honours went to Ken Edwards who performed far better when opening the
attack. Earlier in the season Geoff Clifton took 9 for 20 against Hazlemere.
The most heartening feature of the 2nd XI's play was the all-round improvement
of two 15 year olds, Steve Junger and Allan Edwards.
On each of the last three Saturdays only twenty-two players were available, the
minimum requirement. For one Sunday game only 9 ^sn were able to play. Should
any resident of Coleshill think he has the ability to play the game, he would
be welcomed as a member.
A St. Valentine's Leap Year dance will take place on Friday, 20th February 1976.
The Annual General Meeting took place at the Village Hall on Friday, 14th November
attended by 24 people.
The Treasurer reported a cash surplus of £106 despite a staggering increase in
the cost for playing equipment of £145- This was the bill for kitting-out the
newly formed 2nd XI and should not occur next year. Our main sources of income
were Dances (£200), donations from Vice-Presidents (|El50) and membership fees (£70).
In 1976j membership dues are increased from £2 to £'3.
Mr. Jack Adams, was re-elected President and. the Vice-Presidents are again to
be invited to. give their support. The General Committee will consist of the
following;
