NOV. '69 DANCER & HEARNE'S at PENN STREET
Our biggest single local industry and employer is to close down entirely,
probably by Christmas, This nust be one of the greatest pieces of
local bad news for years. The factory has indeed been going for a hundred
years, and sone of the 250 workers have been there for almost half that
time. There must be twenty who work there living in Coleshill, and fifty
in Wlnchmore Hill. And this redundancy has hardly happened at a good time.
Gbhor sections of the furniture industry at Wycombe are suffering more than
usual, and some are laying men off. And when a man has been a chairmaker
all his life, it is hard for him to find similar work within travelling
distance at,a difficult tine like this. Some of them indeed might be able
to go in for the government retraining scheme, but once they are equipped
for other work, how can they expect to have the same standing in pay and
promotion as they had before? Once they find another job most local men
can expect to have to travel further to work. But we all know the difficulty
unemployed men over forty, and most certainly men over fifty, have
in finding work in this harsh society of ours.
If in the event it turns out that I've painted too black a picture,
I shall be among the first to be delighted. But my main point is that such
a situation should be the concern of all thoughtful Christians in our two
villages. You will find elsewhere in this newsletter a report of how
prayer can work; if we Christians are worth our salt we shall remember the
workers at Dance it & Hearne very much in our public and private prayers.
And it may be that there are some of us in positions of responsibility in
our own work who can ease the transition from one job to another. j_ 0 . DM .rj.
W.I. ANNUAL BAZAAR
The Committee of the W.I. has great pleasure in announcing that Mr.
D. Pusey has consented to open the ¥.1. Annual Bazaar which will be held
on Saturday 29 November.
MR CHARLIE JEKRAM
We are sorry to hear that Mr Charlie Jerram of 6 Manor Way went into
hospital towards the end of last month, and hope he will soon be his old
self again.
WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
On October 1st, the Women's Institute entertained the ladies from
Coleshill House & Rushymead to tea, followed by a most delightful programme
of music rendered by Mrs Grerhardi, Mrs Collins and Mrs Morris.

At the Village Hall Committee meeting on Monday 13"0otober^ members
were delighted to'see. Mr Browne - his first appearance after his severe
operation.
The Secretary reported that the proceeds from the Jumble Sale on 26th
September amounted to £53, a result, the Chairman added, largely due to the
many helpers on the evening. The floor - a hardy perennial - was the next
item on the agenda and members were amazed when Mr Rann left his seat and
produced a.floor cleaning apparatus, not a toy but the sort used by professionals^
which he and Mr Adams had reconditioned and offered as a gift.
The offer was most gratefully accepted and before members could regain
their breaths Mr Rann, by invitation, said that he and Mr Smith had taken
up some floorboards. Damage was quits repairable, not a major operation -
and he a,^ Mr Smith agreed to carry out the necessary repairs providing no
unforeseen hazards arose.
There were no nore sensations. Arrangements were made for the Hallowe1
en Party, when music will be provided for dancing, and it was arranged to
hold a whist drive - almost traditional - on Friday 12 December.
It is important that the Hallowe'en Party be well attended because the
floor repairs may cost a lot for replacements and the Committee wishes to
add some gadgets to its latest toy.
MISS BOYLE
Coleshill and Winchmore Hill people will want to join i*1 wishing
Miss Boyle, our local health visitor, much happiness in her retirement
which begins this month. Many local babies who have long since grown
up have been supervised by her, and she will be very much missed by
elderly people as well. We are glad that she will continue to live at
her house in Whielden Street.
VILLAG-E BONFIRE
As part of the celebration of our patronal feast of All Saints,
there will be a bonfire on Coleshill Common on November 5th with the
permission of the Parish Council. The church youth club have built it
but everyone is invited. For safety's sake we ask that all fireworks
be handed over to the person in charge of them, as grave injuries can
be caused when fireworks go off in crowds. Please warn your children
not to carry fireworks in their pockets or have them in open boxes;
and not to throw them when they're alight or hold them unless the instructions
definitely say so. Every year on 5 November there are tragedies
through people's thoughtlessness or downright foolishness,
HiWe shall light the bonfire at 6.30.
It's not that Christianity has been tried and found wanting; it's
been found hard and not tried.

PAY INCREASE AFTER A WEEK'S PRAYER.
A group of 252 protesting Spanish workers have won their battle for
more pay and ended their eight-day 'pray-in' at a Roman-Catholic convent
church in Seville.
The workers, many accompanied by their wives and children, filed out
of the church after a spokesman for their employer, the Colomina G-.
Serrano Company, announced that their demands for back pay would be met.

MEETING- Off THE W.I.
'Mrs. Elizabeth Harvey came to the aid of the Coleshill W.I. meeting
held en Thursday, October 9th, when the speakers Mr. & Mrs. Millar phoned
, to say they could not manage to come and tell us about their round-theworld
trip to New Zealand. Mrs. Harvey told us of her life in Dockland,
where sho was warden at the "Missions to _Seamen" in Victoria Dock Rd.
for 11 years.
'She held hor audience enthralled with tales of her "difficult"
Seamen, and teaching ones of sailors who really admired her for all the
help arid advice she gave them,,
'They call the Mission "Plying Angol"g and that is a very appropriate
nans for Elisabeth Harvey, a very remarkable Lady.s

ART EXHIBITION.
There will be an exhibition of paintings by Mr. Jago Stone at the
Rod Lion, Coleshill, during licensing hours from Friday 7 November
until further notice.
QEG£R-BILL COTTAG3.
We are very pleased to welcome Mr. & Mrs. Hall who have moved
from West London to live in Ongar-Hill Cottage, which Mr, & Mrs.
John Harris son have .Just left. We hope they will be very happy in
their new home and will quickly find new friends.
RECOVERING- FROM AN ACCIDENT.
Mrs, Miriam Brazil of Little SharcLoloes, the daughter of Mrs,
Adams of Amber Cottages, had a serious car accident on the Missenden
by-pass on Monday evening, 3D October, but we are glad to hear she
is making a satisfactory recovery in hospital.
' VILLAG-E-KALL DANCE,
A dance will be held at the Village Hall on Friday 14 November
from 8.30 p.m. to 1 a.m. There will be a licensed bar. The
proceeds will be given towards the repairing of the hall floor.
Tickets may be had at the Red Lion.

Congratulations io Bruoe Riley of 11 The Bit, Goleshiill, on his
marriage to Miss Margery Pratt of The London Road, Amershani, on the
morning of Saturday 18 October. We wish them all G-od's blessing and
