Bonkers Or What?
Not so long ago a visitor from another country came to see me who was entirely
convinced that his landlord was putting magic mushrooms in his food. He was
also under the impression that this was a traditional English way of making
visitors feel unwelcome and dropping the gentle hint that it was time to move
on. Could I please confirm that this was indeed the case? The things I see and
hear in this job. You couldn’t make it up! Bonkers or what?
Joseph thought that Mary was bonkers, trying to palm him off with a story about
her baby being the Son of God. Later, when this miracle-working charismatic
young Rabbi started claiming the same thing for himself, Jesus’ brothers and
sisters came to restrain him and take him home to be cared for in a darkened
room. When Mary and her friend met Jesus risen from the dead and ran to tell St
Peter and the others, they laughed in her face. Bonkers or what?
On the face of it, the Christian faith does seem pretty far-fetched. Fancy
believing that God became a human being all those years ago in the back end of
nowhere, a little place called Nazareth. Fancy believing that this Jesus lived life
as it should be lived and taught his followers to do the same. Fancy believing
that he rose from the dead and as High Priest of all humanity lives forever to
intercede with God on our behalf taking away the need to fear death. Bonkers or
what?
Well probably the latter. The ‘Incarnation’ as we call it, this business of God
becoming a man is the foundation truth of Christianity. If it is true then all the
rest is true, “God is with us” which is what the name Emmanuel means. That is
why in his famous carol ‘Hark the herald angels sing’ Charles Wesley could
write:
Christ by highest heaven adored, Christ the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin’s womb!
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, hail the incarnate deity,
Pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus our Emmanuel.
Hark the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn king.
Bonkers or what? You decide.

News from All Saints'
Harvest Festival
The church was beautifully decorated by Catherine Green and her team, with
flowers and produce giving all the autumn colours. They served to remind us all
that, whether we acknowledge it or not, we are all dependant on God’s creation.
The day was also the Wedding Anniversary of Mary Wege, who managed to
attend the service in her wheel chair.
Harvest Supper
There was a full house at the Supper to enjoy an excellent meal, provided this
year by a new team under the lead of Gillian Sach. Many thanks to her and her
helpers for their hard work in organising everything. The mouth-watering
choice of desserts was irresistible as always. There were a number of new faces
to be seen – I hope they will there again next year.
All Saints’ Patronal Festival
Another day – another meal. This time on a smaller scale but just as successful.
The small hall was filled after the service, for a croissant and coffee breakfast
and a chance to chat. As usual on All Saints’ Day there was also a Choral
Evensong at the six o’clock service.
Autumn Clear-up
No fewer than fifteen people turned out to help spruce up the churchyard for the
winter, and also make sure that the whole village could be satisfied with its
condition for Remembrance Day. A great raking of leaves was accomplished
and some aching muscles acquired!

Mary Wege 1936 - 2009
Mary was born in Tyler’s Green and after primary school went to Challoners
Grammar School. Mary joined a country dancing club and went every Friday
evening. There she met a boy who was also a beginner and was rather shy.
After a few weeks he escorted her home. Mary invited him to take her to the
pictures, a quick kiss at the gate afterwards and Chris was hooked. The rest as
they say is history!
Nursing was an important part of Mary’s life and via the Red Cross she
became part of the voluntary nursing team at Amersham Hospital. In 1958
Mary and Chris were married. The arrival of Philip, then Rachel followed by
David kept Mary busy. Once David was at school, Mary became involved with
the School Dental Service as a nurse and with the Red Cross at their Day
Centre for the elderly and disabled. Mary was also a volunteer helper with the
Red Cross for many years, visiting the disabled in their homes.
At age 43 she began training as an SEN and won the Student of the Year award
in 1979. She began work at Amersham Hospital, which she felt was the most
fulfilling period of her life.
Looking after her mother, Doris, took Mary away from full time nursing but
she was still involved as part time matron at a girls school and Amersham
College. Later she enrolled with a Nursing Agency tackling all kinds of
nursing jobs.
Mary then joined the Rushymead Day Hospice and worked with them until she
was 70 years old.
Her life revolved around her family, as a wife to Chris, a mum to Philip,
Rachel and David and grandmother to seven grandchildren. Mary had a strong
faith and she was a regular member of the congregation at All Saints.
Mary had a very individual personality which was respected in both her
professional and private life, very much a people person with a sense of
humour, with the gift of being able to get on with anyone.

Mary had so many friends in the village that I am not able to write
individually to each of you. I want to thank you so much for the messages of
sympathy and support that have helped me and my family through a very sad
time.

All Saints’ Church Flowers
Harvest Festival this year meant that the church was a blaze of colour – both
from the wonderful foliage and flowers from the gardens of our Flower Team,
and the magnificent dahlias provided by Ginny and Geoff Jordan. The school,
of course, had their usual dazzling display in the porch of their sunflower
collage, intriguing little ‘bun’ animals and their own school-grown vegetables.
Well done to all the children and many thanks to Catherine Watts for all her
work and encouragement of them.
We were all greatly saddened by the loss of our lovely, brave Mary Wege, one
of our loyal Flower Team members, and were glad that we were able to fill the
church with her favourite flowers for her funeral service. Our heartfelt
sympathy goes out to Chris.
After the Patronal service, when the flowers are all white for All Saints, came
the Remembrance service with its poppies. The church will be filled with
Christmas foliage and candles for the Christingle service on Sunday 13 th
December followed by the fully decorated church for Christmas.
After Christmas comes our very important Coffee Morning and Bring and Buy
which this year Richard and Rosemary Valentine are very kindly hosting for us
on Wednesday 27 th January 2010. This is your opportunity to shed all those
Christmas presents which don’t quite hit the button, and find someone else’s
that absolutely do!Easter

All Saints’ Church Flowers
It is a very sociable, fun morning to catch
up after Christmas and is vital to support
the Flower Fund. Donations to the Flower
Fund are always welcome!

Neighbourhood Action
The changes to the local NAG group are still being implemented and will make
the process of information gathering and communicating to the neighbourhoods
concerned, a far more effective and constructive process.
Your local NAG group covers: Coleshill, Winchmore Hill, Penn & Penn Street,
Seer Green, Knotty Green & Chalfont St Giles.
Bucks County Council has established Local Area Forums (LAF). These groups
cover County,District and Parish Council decision making on areas as diverse
as policing, roads & verges, vandalism, traffic control and waste & litter. They
are attended by councillors from all levels and senior personnel covering
service providers within the county. It is therefore more important than ever
that small villages have their voices heard.
The Chairman of the local NAG will attend the LAF meetings so as to establish
a line of communication, allowing local NAG groups to take on information,
complaints and concerns from their local areas and direct these concerns to the
appropriate people.
As your local NAG representative as well as a Parish Councillor, if you have
any issues or concerns, please let me know and I can raise these with the
appropriate departments.

Two years ago we picked the darkest
time of the year - early February - to
cheer up the village with a pantomime.
It was hugely popular. On Saturday 6 th
February 2010 - we are planning a
Magic and Comedy Show by Ian
m g Keable. When he went to Aylesford in
Kent, they described it as ‘fabulous’.
I Nearer to home, in Berkshire, they
describe it as a ‘good fun comedy magic
j ; show - not only excellent magic, but
extremely funny.’ In Coleshill, you will
KEMBLE not only get the comedy and magic, but
also our usual delicious supper.
Altogether an unmissable evening.

Parish Council
The Village Pond Appeal has raised £2,500 so far, which is fantastic, but we still
have a long way to go. Estimates that have already been sourced from ‘muck
away’ companies are between £15,000 and £18,000 plus VAT. This sounds
incredibly large for dredging and clearing the pond. But as we progress along
life’s red-tape we learn that we have to have permits for doing the work,
certification from the Soil Environment Agency on the toxicity of the silt,
certification of the toxicity of the land where we can dispose of silt, fish
husbandry reports and so on. It was agreed in past Parish Council meetings that
the work on the pond would be carried out as the pond is an integral and
important part of our village and receives many daily visitors. Any donations
would and will be gratefully received; please make cheques payable to Coleshill
Parish Council c/o 2 Manor Way, Coleshill.
This coming winter New Road will be gritted as it is now on a bus route. As you
know residents have lobbied BCC on numerous occasions for this to be done.
With this in mind, remember that bad weather reports are sent to me from the
Met Office and these are passed onto residents who have signed up for email
alerts. If you have not already done so please email me so that I can then add
you to the list. The alerts also include Thames Valley Police alerts about crime
in the area and this has proved very welcome in the past.
The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Thursday 7 th January
2010, all members of the public are welcome so please come along and join the
discussion in the democratic 1⁄2 hour which is a the beginning of the meeting.

Firstly, we would like to thank all the volunteers who sold tickets, donated
desserts, hosted tables, decorated tables and generally helped at the above. We
could not have done it without you and we hope we can/will call upon your
services next year. A special thanks to Graham Swerling who donated all the
dairy products. Finally, thanks to everyone who kindly donated raffle prizes.
We are unable to name everyone but you know who you are and you did a
sterling job.
We are absolutely delighted to report the Harvest Festival Supper raised in
excess of £600 profit. Four donations of £50 each will be given to groups in
Coleshill; with monies going towards helping with the cost of the teas after the
Carol Service, work needed on the village pond, flowers for the church and
Coleshill Village School.

Amersham Parking
There is extreme concern about the
Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC)
new parking proposals for Old Amersham.
We are therefore launching our "No to
NOTO
Parking Plans" Campaign to stop these
proposals.

longer be free parking anywhere in Old

Feedback from the general public is required by Saturday November
21st 2009, at the exhibition days at St Mary's Church Rooms.
It was not made clear that objections and feedback to the new plans are
required on the day of the exhibition. Any feedback received after 21 st
November will not be included to shape the draft Traffic Regulation Order.
Once this order is submitted it will be extremely difficult to make major
changes to the proposals. Given the timescales imposed by BCC we are
launching the ‘No to Parking Plans’ Campaign.

exchanged.

As anticipated, the publication of the
book brings to a close the Coleshill History Project after two and a half years
of activity. However, interest in the history of the Village remains and it is
intended that a lower key Coleshill Historical Society will be formed under the
leadership of Chris Wege. An initial meeting is planned at 8.00 pm in Coleshill
Village Hall on Tuesday 16 th February 2010 when the details will be
discussed. Any one interested in joining is invited to attend.

Coleshill W.I.
Since I last wrote we have been having a busy and enjoyable time at Coleshill
W.I. I have just returned from our A.G.M. and I am pleased to report that we
had enough willing volunteers to form a new committee with a change of
officers and Joan Domin as a very popular choice for our new President. We
have to thank all the members who are standing down for their hard work,
especially Lindsey. Let’s face it we couldn’t keep going without that generous
and unstinting input from all those who willingly take on the organisational
roles. Also one of our members has said that she will take over the job of Group
Convenor from me, for which I am very grateful. Several ladies from the
village accepted the invitation to join us for tea on this occasion. We were
delighted to see them and at least one of them has expressed an interest in
becoming a member. Of course, we hope there will be more, for fresh faces
bring new ideas and keep the W.I. vibrant. Mary Wege was conspicuous by her
absence and will be sadly missed.
The talk at the September meeting was on Hidden London and made us all
realise there is still much to learn about our wonderful capital city. I missed the
October meeting (because I was busy with a certain wedding) but the reports I
heard of the excellent speaker talking about the history of the Queen’s Flight
made me wish I had been there. Before we know it we shall be tucking into our
Christmas lunch and another successful year in the W.I. will be behind us.
The Chesswoods Group, which consists of seven local W.I.s getting together,
had a very entertaining Autumn Meeting with a champion lady fire-
eater/magician showing us her theatrical costumes which are made by a
gentleman called Bunny, whose work was often seen worn by Danny La Rue.
These outfits were every bit as amazing and for an hour we were transported
from our everyday lives to a world of over the top glamour, a real tonic! At the
moment I am busy organising the Group’s Craft Day when we shall be learning
the art of making paper flowers to enhance our Christmas decorations.
Did you know that Coleshill W.I. has a Film Group now? This provides a
chance to see current films with friends. Recently this little sub-group have
enjoyed watching ‘The Duchess’ and ‘Julie and Julia’ with time for discussion
afterwards.
Visitors are welcome at all our meetings, and are assured of a delicious tea and
lots of friendly chatter. From the above description you can see that there is a lot
of variety in our activities and we hope you may feel inspired to make a New
Year’s Resolution to come and meet us! Why not?

Horticultural Society
The Horticultural Society is holding an open evening in January 2010 in the
small hall of Coleshill village hall (final date tba); every resident is welcome to
come along and discuss the timetable for the coming year’s meetings and
events. We welcome all ideas for new and interesting categories in the Village
Show, plus any topics you would like to be highlighted and discussed at the
Spring Talk Evening.
To give the photographers advance notice, we are planning these categories for
next year’s show: Patterns in Nature; The Human Face; Somewhere to Sit.
Following this year’s show we are pleased that over £500 was passed on to the
Pond Appeal – including a large amount raised by raffling Paul Windsor’s
lovely photo.
With the winter months looming please spare a thought for the birds in your
garden and make sure they have access to fresh water and food. Also it’s at this
time of year that you may be thinking of taking cuttings from your plants in
readiness for next year. If you should have too many, give or swap them by
putting a notice on the village website www.coleshill.org
Every resident of Coleshill automatically becomes a member of the
Horticultural Society on moving into the Village so come along to our meeting
in January 2010 and have a chat and a cup of coffee with us.

Since the last edition of the Village Newsletter the Village Hall has been used
by the Village for a Coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support,
Harvest Festival Supper, Church coffee on All Saints’ Day, the launch of the
Coleshill book, the Tennis Club Talent show and the School Christmas Bazaar.
Coleshill W.I. and the Simmons Bridge Club will be having their Christmas
festivities and there will be ‘Church Tea’ after the Carol Service.
So ‘the Village’ has made good use of the facility we have here and maybe
some newcomers to the Village have had a chance to see the Hall. To book the
Hall please contact me on 433421. Residents have reduced hiring charges for
personal use.

Red Lion
It does not seem possible that yet another year has nearly passed and in the next
few days the school will have held their Christmas Fayre in the Village Hall.
Again, as in previous years, we will be open for drinks on Christmas Day from
11.00 am to 3.00pm, which for us is one of the most enjoyable sessions of the
year (no food!).
Many have been asking about the tee-off time for golf at Pool’s Patch on
Boxing Day. As usual we will put people into groups of six, starting at 10.30am.
If you arrive after midday, you will probably find the tee has closed.
On the evenings of both Christmas and Boxing Days, we will be closed.
On New Year’s Eve, we will have music and a free buffet on offer. We try to
keep the evening informal, but if you are coming in a large group (6 or over) do
let us know in advance and we will keep a table for you if possible. We will
have a glass of bubbly available at midnight also.
None of our teams in the darts,
quiz and crib and dominoes
leagues are shining at present.
Most are in mid-table, hopefully
playing a waiting game! I will
report further in the New Year.

Coleshill Tennis Club
Being the beginning of the winter and after the extensive CTC report in the last
newsletter there is very little tennis to report, except a reminder that Sunday
Club play continues throughout the winter months from 10.30 am to which all
members are welcome. To other villagers who are not members of the Tennis
Club, under the Rules and Regulations of the Club you are entitled to use one of
the Club courts from 8 am until 12 noon on Wednesdays.
The social event and fundraiser was a ‘Coleshill’s Got Talent’ evening. The
success of the evening relied on members of the Tennis Club and Villagers
putting themselves forward to perform on the night. Eventually enough acts
came forward and there was plenty of entertainment. The evening was a sell out,
and those who attended were not disappointed. What a fantastic evening it was!
The acts included: dancing girls, poetry recital, children singing duets, children
singing and dancing, comedy duos, a Full Monty, piano recital, trumpet playing,
an operatic aria, and dance routines. A superb supper and wine was served with
our younger members serving and clearing plates.
Finally, the judges decided on three acts for the final vote by the audience. This
was extremely tough, but they chose Rachael Nolan who performed an operatic
aria from the Marriage of Figaro, Jessica Gajadharsingh who played ‘River
Flows in You’ on the piano – the judges where amazed that she was self taught
and had never had a piano lesson - and finally Maddie Murray and Chris George
with their ‘We’re a Couple of Swells’ act from the musical Easter Parade,
accompanied on the piano by Ruth Murphy. The audience then voted for their
favourite act and the eventual winner, by one vote, was Jessica who was then
presented with her trophy by Lindsey Haubner and played her piece again.
There are many thanks to the many people who made the evening a success.
Our judges - Lindsey Haubner, Jenny Earp and Peter Dodds. What a difficult
task they were set but they coped admirably. Our compere - John Ullman who
ensured that the evening kept moving on time! Peter Clackett - who spent hours
putting up and operating the lights - they definitely added a professional touch
to the evening. Steve - our ‘video man’. Hopefully, this will be put on a DVD
and may well be on the Village Website and You Tube. Ruth Murphy who
kindly accompanied several acts on the piano. Kerry Ferguson and Tanya
Richardson who both ensured that glasses were topped up. All the committee
members and junior members for their help behind the scenes. And of course all
the contestants – without you the evening would not have been possible – you
all proved that there really is a lot of talent in Coleshill.

Cricket Club
As 2009 draws towards its end, it is a time for reflection, and for the Cricket
Club it is year that is filled with Happy Memories.
The season started as in previous years with more hope than anticipation for
both the 1 st and 2 nd XI. The 2 nd XI made the more promising start to the season
with a couple of early wins. They then went on to experience a frustrating year
with some terrific results mixed in with some disappointing performances. They
eventually ended up in mid-table but with promise for the 2010 season.
The 1 st XI had a disappointing start and after five games was plum bottom of the
table but the tide was to turn at the end of May when the first game was won at
Englefield Green. The team then went on to win eight of the next ten games
with only one loss, meaning that, going in to the last game a win would see
them promoted. The win was duly delivered with a superb bowling and batting
performance against Amersham Hill and promotion was secured.
The next day news began to filter through that due to other results Coleshill
were in fact Champions - a stunning end to the season for a team who the
previous season had finished second to bottom of the table.
Hopes are high for next season but we do need to recruit a couple of quality
Cricketers so should you know of anyone who is interested please go to ourEaster

Following the AGM the Chairmanship of the cricket club has passed to Henry
Amar, this is following a three year stint by Graham Flack who has achieved a
massive amount, but who felt it was time for him to stand down. The Cricket
club would like thank Graham for all his efforts and achievements.
All that remains is for me to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a

Coleshill Mobile Library
The mobile library visits Coleshill every other Friday. It stops beside the pond
and is there from 2.20 to 2.35pm. It’s only a short window of time but is well
worth a visit. It’s stocked with a wide range of books, including large print,
and has a special children’s section with little seats. There are videos, DVDs,
talking books and the librarian can even sell you stamps!
The mobile library is due on Friday 27th November and December 11th 2009
Coleshill Common
Work on the common has continued across the autumn with grass cutting,
planting and clearing areas of scrub. The mushroom tree has recently been
pruned back to shape. There are several natural pond areas below the main
pond which fill up when there is rain and provide a valuable natural habitat to
complement the main pond. Many people do not know there is more than one
pond in Coleshill. Have a look when you are next on the common.

Coleshill Infants School
At the beginning of term all the children at the school took part in art week,
learning about the life and work of local artist, Sir Stanley Spencer. Year 2
children had an enjoyable visit to the Stanley Spencer art gallery in Cookham
and everyone contributed to a display depicting some of his paintings, including
‘Scarecrow at Cookham’ and ‘Swan Upping at Cookham’.
This year the school is undertaking several international cross-curricular
projects to promote global awareness, enabling our children to learn about
different cultures and countries around the world. As a church school we feel it
is important for our children to learn about charitable-giving and recognise that
they have hugely privileged lives compared with other children elsewhere. The
school is supporting our link school in Zambia, as well as Wateraid, for which
we are collecting buckets of pennies for their ‘buckets of water’ appeal, and also
old cartridges and mobile phones for ‘Seeds for Africa’. The older children have
organised a sale of second hand books and toys for our charities and are also
planning a sponsored sports event later in the term. We would welcome any
contributions for our charity collections.
The school is also taking part in two other international initiatives this year. The
first one is UNICEF’s ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ Award in which the children
learn about the needs and rights of children (such as the rights to clean water,
protection, education, healthcare and food etc). Through the scheme, the
children also learn about their responsibilities and how their values and choices
help to shape them, hopefully to become good citizens. Secondly, we are
participating in the British Council’s ‘International Schools Award’ for which
we have to undertake seven international projects. One is a ‘Connecting
Classrooms’ project, where we ask children in other countries to send photos
from their classroom windows in order for us to learn about their country. Also
we are asking children around the world to send us postcards of where they live.
If you are travelling abroad this year to Europe or more exotic parts, we would
love to receive a postcard from you.
Thank you to everyone who gave generously and helped support our Christmas
Bazaar on Saturday 7th November, as well as supporting us throughout the year.
Our Christmas play this year is a musical by Sheila Wilson, entitled ‘The Star
Attraction’. We always appreciate an audience for our dress rehearsal, so if you
are able to come you will be warmly welcomed on Monday, December 7 th at
11.00 a.m. Our end of term service will take place at 11.00 a.m. on Friday,
December 18 th at All Saints’ Church, to which you are also very welcome to
attend.

Pond Appeal 2009
We have now received over £2,500 towards the cost of the renovation of the
Village pond, but we still need more funds to enable the work to commence. The
cost of the work will come to over £15,000 which is way beyond the Parish’s
available resources.

Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning
We would like to thank everyone who made our coffee morning in aid of
