Boxing Day is the Worst
On Boxing Day last year, the Tsunami engulfed the property and lives of
so many in South East Asia. At lunchtime, a couple whose son was on a
diving holiday in the Andaman Islands came to see me fearing the worst.
Who can forget the terrible pictures of the tidal waves lashing the
coast and the utter devastation that followed. Did the pictures move
you? Did you give something to the disaster appeal? Did you reflect on
the fragility of life?
Since then we have seen, Hurricane Katrina and her ugly sisters make
their way up the Gulf of Mexico, the people of Northern Pakistan were
shaken to breaking point, so many natural disasters following one upon
the other.
This year we saw how stressful times have a way of exposing the best
and worst of human nature. At a more mundane level, being closeted
together with our nearest and dearest for 72 hours from Christmas Eve
to Boxing Day can test the patience of the most loving family to
breaking point. It is always on Boxing Day that I get busy picking up
the pieces.
But take heart. The couple that feared their son lost discovered many
days later that he was alive. The wonderful response of the British
public to the disaster appeals has transformed the lives of those who
imagined all was lost. Despite the worst that Mother Nature could do,
the power of the human spirit to love and be loved is greater.
At Christmas we remember how, when all seemed lost, a small baby born
in the ever divided and sorrowing town of Bethlehem taught mankind that
the power of love is greater than anything this world, natural or
otherwise, can throw at us. Jesus did not stay a baby, he grew up,
showed how life should be lived, taught amazing truths, died for the
sins of the world and rose again to a new and everlasting existence,
which he calls us to join by faith in his name.

News from All Saints'
Harvest Supper
A full house on the 7 October enjoyed the usual good company at the Harvest
Supper. Our thanks go to Pat Dawson, who with Chris George, Ruth Murphy,
Liz Radclyffe, and Rosie Searles, provided the excellent meal.

Harvest Gift Day
The Parish Gift Day was held on the 2 nd October with the aim of putting the
finances of St Mary’s and All Saints’ back on track. The results exceeded all
expectations, the total (including Gift Aid rebate) reaching the sum of £40,774,
which will make it possible for All Saints’ to replenish its reserves.
Reading in Public
The congregation at All Saints’ are hoping for a miraculous improvement in the
standard of Bible Readings during services. On the 17 th October Stan Pretty,
who recently was responsible for producing both the Martyr’s Play and the
Passion Play, held a coaching session for readers. This was at St Mary’s, but we
hope for a repeat at All Saints’ in the New Year. This should inspire us to project
our words and meaning more effectively.

All Saints’ Charity
A Cookery Demonstration was held in Coleshill Village Hall on Friday 21st
October. This was organised by Megs and Luisa of Meluki in Beaconsfield.
Unfortunately, because it clashed with half term for some, it was not as well
attended as we had hoped. However it was an entertaining morning and raised
a profit of £471 for the Rosanna Hospital in Kurdestan.
We are planning our next event for the end of February and, as soon as we
have fixed the date and decided what it will be, we will let you know. I think I
can assure you that it will be something interesting and well worth supporting!

All Saints’ Church Flowers
After all the action at the Flower Festival at the beginning of May, the Flower
Group has coasted through the summer with a sprinkling of weddings to
Harvest Festival, when you may have been surprised to be greeted in the
church porch by Mr and Mrs Scarecrow and some very scary animals made out
of vegetables! These were the creations of the village school under the
guidance of Catherine Watts assisted by Jane Stainer. There were also very
realistic baskets of vegetables made out of modelling clay so the porch looked
very colourful indeed. Thank you and well done to everybody. The inside of
the church, decorated by the grown-ups, looked very good too, and John
Savory kindly provided the Harvest Loaf!
The next major effort will be decorating the church for Christmas starting with
the Christingle service on December 11 th . This year look out for a brand new
stable which Jack Haubner has very kindly constructed as the other was
literally on its last wormwoody legs, and figures which Annie Gunning has
given new coats (of paint) where necessary. Many, many thanks to them both.
A fund raising event will be organised in the New Year but donations to All
Saints’ Church Flower Fund are welcome at any time as flowers for the
pedestals in church are naturally costly.
If you would like to join our Flower Group you would be very welcome. We
are a very friendly bunch! Just give me a ring.

Red Lion
As we approach the festive season we confirm we will be open as normal for
drinks from 11.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. on Christmas Day. The Boxing Day golf
tournament will commence from Pools Patch with Jonathan Eardley as starter
from 10.30 a.m. We will be closed in the evening on both Christmas and Boxing
Day. Nothing special has been arranged for New Years Eve, but all are welcome
to a complimentary buffet (hot & cold) and a glass of champagne at midnight.
Our various teams are having mixed fortunes at present. Having won the 1st
division last year in the Crib and Dominoes league, we are languishing firmly at
the foot of the table at present. However we have progressed to the quarter-
finals of the Knock-out Cup, a competition we have yet to win. The ’B’ darts
team were promoted last year to join the ’A’s in the 1st division and both teams
are holding their own mid-table. Finally the ‘A’ quiz team, after being demoted
last year slightly unexpectedly, are unbeaten at the top of Division 2. The
’B’team who were promoted to Division 1 are finding the going fairly tough
and are yet to win a match, although in fairness they have to date played against
the stronger teams.
Anybody who is interested in playing in any of the teams only has to ask and I
am sure we can find a place for them.

Parish Council
As I write this piece for the Village Newsletter the signposts are being placed,
which will show the new speed restrictions that are coming into force
throughout Coleshill. It has been a very long and laborious task for the
Councillors on Coleshill Parish Council, who have worked closely with
Buckinghamshire County Council, to achieve the correct speed limit restrictions
for our Village. The hope is that the new restrictions will diminished the racing
through the village from drivers trying to dodge traffic jams on the main road,
and in doing so make Coleshill’s roads a safer place to walk and drive.
Chiltern District Council are placing all planning applications online from
December 2005, this should in time make it easier to view applications and also
make it more convenient to study them, as villagers won’t have to go to the
planning dept at CDC to see proposed plans.
The Parish Council has had the new sign and plinth placed at the cricket
meadow now renamed ‘Jack Adams Field’.
The Parish Council meeting have been well
attended this year by members of the public
and it is always useful for the Councillors to
hear your comments during the democratic 1⁄4
hour. Sometimes it seems too short a time, but
a time limit has to be observed as there is
plenty for the Councillors to discuss and
decide on during the meeting. The speed limit
and planning applications always take time to
explain as well as the ongoing discussion of
the purchasing and installing of new
equipment for the play-area at Hill Meadow.

Tennis Club
By the time you have your Newsletter, the AGM would have taken place. This
year we were able to use our own Clubhouse as the venue, we now have
electricity making life much easier!
Our fundraising event, the Barn Dance was very successful, the dancing was
extremely energetic and tribute must be paid to the live band, The Kinderhook
Band. The musicians of the band and the caller were very professional and
enthusiastic.
Tuesday evening Club Play has of course finished for the Winter period but
Sunday Club Play continues, commencing at 10:30. If you are new to the Club,
thinking of joining us or simply would like to play more often, do come along
on Sunday mornings.
The Junior Fun Day and Tournament, a one day event during September was
well supported and enjoyed by all who attended. The tournament winners were
presented with cups and shields, we hope that this will be a yearly event. Our
Junior numbers have increased during the course of this year which is very
gratifying.

Horticultural Society
As promised in the autumn newsletter, the Committee have been busy on ideas
for next year’s Diamond Jubilee.
The highlights of our programme for 2006 will be:
Spring
The Spring talk will be held on Friday April 28 th in the Village Hall. Our
speaker will be Timothy Walker – back by popular demand after his entertaining
and informative talk this Spring. More details in the next newsletter.
We will also be holding a Bring and Swap plant sale in the couple of hours prior
to the talk, similar to the one we held this year as part of the May Bank Holiday
Flower Festival. I’ll remind you again in the next newsletter, when you might be
in the process of dividing perennials.
Summer
We hope that the green triangles at each end of the village will be blooming. We
are working on a low maintenance planting plan that will give some interest
throughout the year.
The other idea is to have an ‘Open Gardens’ day in late June – limited to
residents of the village only. We hope to be able to offer a wide range of
different types of gardens for people to look at and get ideas from, and if you
would be interested in opening your garden, please let me know. We also hope
that the children will be planting containers to make a display in the centre of
the village over this weekend.
Autumn

The 60 Annual Show will take place on Saturday September 9 th .
We will not be changing the classes substantially from this year’s show, and we
obviously hope that as many people as possible will participate in this landmark
year.
Tea and cakes will be available!
The childrens’ workshops will also be continuing – the next one is planned for

Licensing Act 2003
This Act comes into force on Monday 21st November 2005 and I am sure
many of you will have heard in the press of the horrors of 24 hour binge
drinking. Not in Coleshill however! The main differences from the old act are
that all licensed premises have to operate under a Premises License which
states the hours of opening and the conditions that might apply and a person
holding a Personal License has to supervise these conditions. Also,
responsibility for licensing matters has passed from the Magistrates to the
Local Authority (Chiltern District Council). As Christine and myself are the
only two people at present in the village with personal licenses, we have
agreed to take responsibility for the licensed premises in the village. There are
three of these and a brief synopsis of the licensing position is as follows:-
1) Cricket Club
The license runs exactly the same as under the old act. This means any
function cannot continue past 11.30 p.m. with the benefit of alcoholic drinks
being served.
2) The Red Lion
We are able to serve drinks now from 10.00 a.m. and during the week (Monday
to Thursdays) up to 11.30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday evenings we can stay
open until 12.30 a.m. and on Sunday evening until midnight.
3) The Village Hall
Previously the hall was not licensed. Under the act there is a limit of 10
functions a year where alcohol can be sold unless the premises are fully
licensed. Therefore the committee wisely applied for a full license which
enables functions to take place as before (i.e. ending at midnight) but instead of
having to apply to the Magistrates for a license, they have to see me to
complete a form and pay a fee of £20 to the Village Hall.
If anyone has any queries on the new act, I will be pleased to try and answer
them. In addition there is a very helpful Licensing Department at Chiltern
District Council. If any villager wants to have a function where alcohol is to be
sold outside the three above places then somebody holding a personal license
will have to apply to Chiltern District Council for a ‘Special event certificate’
and at present the fee is £20.

Mini Farmers Market
A Mini Farmers Market will start
in the Coleshill Small Village hall.
We have savoury pies, fruit pies,
cakes, jams, marmalades, Bennett
Farm
products,
Christmas
decorations and much more.
The first date is Saturday morning
17th December 2005 from 10 a.m to 1 p.m.
Thereafter, we will try to have a market on a Saturday once a month. More
details to follow in 2006.
Anyone who lives in Coleshill who wishes to supply products or produce for
sale will be welcomed.

Village Hall
The Hall has been busy with Children’s Parties, Bridge Drives and Fitness
Classes.
Planning permission has been granted to build a permanent ramp for access to
the Hall.
Unfortunately the present one was damaged on the forecourt and although
repaired, kindly by Jack Haubner, it will only be put out when required and due
notice has been given.
Once again the Hall will be used for the School’s Christmas Bazaar on 19 th
November and Church Tea following the Carol Service on 18 th December.

Global Village - Pakistan
Dear All,
Every morning we count the helicopters flying to Muzzafarabad and then
returning late afternoon. Regrettably, we count the numbers with fingers, there
are just not enough to cope with this disaster but the road to the devastated area
has re-opened and the highly decorated trucks trundle north with tents, bedding,
shovels, spades, wheelbarrows and plastic containers full of water. Aid is now
pouring into the country, together with relief workers, doctors and other
specialists from a variety of nations.
The UN has established their headquarters in the Visa Section at the British
High Commission so I receive updates from Brigadier Strick, the Dutchman in
charge. The news is pretty grim, many of the villages above and around the
Kagan Valley have still to be reached, there are increasing incidence of
gangrene and tetanus, from wounds remaining untreated and doctors are
establishing field hospitals to carry out amputations in an attempt to save lives.
The UN say that this is far worse than the tsunami since the area at the epicentre
of the quake is so difficult to access. Winter too is on its way. Jumpers and
blankets were necessary in the Kagan Valley in September and by November
the first snow falls are expected so a desperate battle to airlift people out before
the winter closes the area completely.
It is Ramadan so a time for the people of Pakistan to donate generously to the
poor. They are doing so with relief centres in every area, fund raising activities
galore (casino nights in Pakistan) Many of our Pakistani friends have opened
their homes as emergency clinics and convalescent homes, whilst the
businessmen of Sialkot have switched from making baseball caps to tents and
blankets.
The earthquake continues to dominate our lives here but life goes on. Adam
returns to Australia on Tuesday, after an absence of 18 months, to prepare for
his return to University. Susannah will stay on here for the time being but has
plans to be in Perth after Christmas. Pip and Kirsten are busy booking the next
part of their adventure - Lahore, Amritsar, the Taj, Delhi, Mumbai and Goa-
whilst Derek and I are off to Thailand at the end of the week for a holiday.

Neighbourhood Watch
I am delighted to report that the village has been very
quiet since the last Newsletter. That is, apart from the
dreaded fireworks. Adults seem to enjoy them at
every opportunity now, whereas they used to be a
treat for children on just one, special, day of the year.
New regulations mean that they should only be let off
after 12 midnight once a year, on New Year’s Eve but
it is very difficult to police. We were amazed this
year, on November 5 th , to see how many were being
let off in the most congested parts of London, way
after midnight, as we traveled through. They must have been letting them off
from balconies.
At least, with the arrival of the new speed limits in the village, we might be
spared some of the squealing brakes and acceleration noise we have had to put
up with recently. One recent speeding car was a stolen vehicle, with a police car
in pursuit, which managed to evade the police through Winchmore Hill.
We have received the annual suggestions from the police about fitting timer
lights to property if you are going to be home late. Keep curtains pulled –
especially if you have presents being wrapped for Christmas. You will not be
able to see people looking in but they will be able to see your interiors and what
you have worth pinching. Exterior movement lights will show them up. And do
make sure children, as well as adults, have bright clothing on, when walking in
our gloomy roads. There are many, pocket sized torches available now. Even at
3p.m. I have almost not seen dog walkers on the road until the last moment.
May we wish you a safe, carefree Christmas – but don’t leave it to luck!

Cricket Club
It is the close season for the cricket club so all the players are taking a well
earned rest. The Cricket Club AGM will be held at the clubhouse on the
Monday 21st November 2005. New club officers will be elected at the AGM

Congratulations - 100 Years
Congratulations to Marjorie Long-Brown who celebrated her
100th birthday on the 21st November 2005. Although not a life-
long resident of Coleshill she has lived here in excess of twenty
years and is well known in the village. It is believed she is the
longest living current Coleshill resident.
I am sure everyone will wish her ‘Happy Birthday’ on such a
splendid occasion and that she enjoys many more years in
Coleshill.

Susan Smith organised a village quiz team to take
part in the BBC EGGHEADS quiz competition.

He has discovered a petit point tapestry footstool of a garden done by a
resident of Coleshill House.

Coleshill Infants School
This term is very busy as usual with many exciting events for the children to
enjoy. In September, all the children took part in an art week, learning about the
Spanish artist, Antoni Gaudi. A large mosaic dragon was made for the entrance
hall and two of our parents worked with the children to make a beautiful
ceramic path in the style of Gaudi in our garden. Sixth form students from
Chesham High also helped with the project.
The whole school visited Whipsnade Wildlife Park earlier in the term and we
had a very happy day looking at the animals and talking to the staff in the
education department. It was fun having the opportunity to touch a wriggly
snake and see a giant African snail close up. The highlight for some children
was riding on the safari double decker bus and seeing all the animals 'from
above'.
Harvest Festival took place in October and was well attended by parents and
visitors. We sold the harvest produce after the service and the children also held
a second hand book sale, which raised £200. The money raised was given to the
Neema School in Kenya. Many of the children at the school are orphans and
very poor. The school badly needs equipment and the facilities there are very
basic, so we were happy to help in the appeal organised by Margaret Williams.
In October the Blunderbus theatre for children group visited the school and gave
an excellent production of 'Elmer the Elephant', followed by an exciting
workshop for the older children, which was great fun. The 'Brazilian Soccer
Coaches' are teaching the children soccer skills every Tuesday afternoon, which
is also proving to be very popular.
Our Christmas play this year is ‘The Very Hopeless Camel'. We always
appreciate an audience for our dress rehearsal, so if you are able to come you

Villagers, parents and ex pupils of Coleshill School will be saddened to learn
that Ann Davison, who was a teacher at Coleshill School from 1949 and head
teacher from 1973 - 1982, passed away on 26th October 2005.Easter

Coleshill W.I.
By the time you read this our November A.G.M. will be behind us and we will
be forging onwards with a new committee. It is always difficult to identify
people with the energy to find time for committee work and I am very grateful
to those who volunteered to help this year saving me the painful business of
twisting arms!! After some serious fund-raising efforts this last year our
finances are in good shape and our membership is in good heart. We were
delighted to have a visitor in September who got in touch through the village
web-site, making our attempts to grapple with modern technology well
worthwhile.
It seems no time since our last report but, as usual, we seem to have fitted a lot
in. Members have visited Wycombe Swan theatre to enjoy the Mikado, Rebecca
and Betty Boothroyd. Many of the audience who went to hear what the last
Speaker of the House of Commons had to say for herself were amazed to find
themselves at a W.I. meeting! The evening was organised by the County
Federation as part of their 85 th Anniversary celebrations and was hugely
appreciated by everyone who was quick enough to get a ticket. Those of us who
went to the W.I. half-yearly council meeting in Aylesbury were treated to a
performance of ‘Yours Truly, C.B.’ the life of Charlotte Bronte and later this
month some of us are off to Windsor for a shopping expedition followed by a
visit to the theatre for an Alan Ayckbourn play. So it has been a theatrical few
months, even our last speaker, at the October meeting, was on the subject “The
humorous side of being an actor”! It has all been good fun but at the same time
educational, especially as opinions are always exchanged in a lively manner
after each occasion! This is very much in the tradition of W.I. and long may it
continue.
Plans are well advanced for our Christmas lunch party, with rehearsals taking
place for an in-house entertainment. This year we have decided to invite a local
caterer to provide the meal so that everyone can relax and enjoy themselves, and
better still, we shall be free of the clearing up too!
Next years’ programme is about to go to the printers, so if you are interested in
seeing it then please get in touch. January is the time for New Year’s
Resolutions, why not make yours to come and visit us. We can promise a warm
welcome.

I am delighted to say that Coleshill Short Mat have had an unprecedented start
to the league season with straight wins over Farwell and Amersham taking
maximum points in both games, let's hope it continues.
Coleshill also is proud to have the current English national singles champion
within their midst. Steven is going on to play the British Isles championships in
Scotland over the weekend of the 19th /20th November and the World
championships in the new year, old hat for steve as he has held the title before
of World Champion. We wish him the best of luck and hope to see the trophy. I
will keep you informed!
All that aside the club continues to thrive and the membership remains in the
low twenties. This is good given the slight lowering of bowls membership
generally. Of course we still welcome new faces to a great game.
